NATURAL Tagua ABE Jewelry:
Called "tagua" in Latin America (pron. tagoua), vegetable ivory comes from a pocket of albumen - whose diameter varies from 1 to 10 cm - contained in the fruits of a palm tree (Phytelephas) which grows between 300 and 1200 m above sea level, in Peru, Colombia and Ecuador, and commonly called the "ivory palm".
As the growth process progresses, the liquid contained in these endosperm pockets becomes opaque and then hardens, eventually becoming pure cellulose. Once harvested, it is dried for over a year, then stripped of its bark and polished.
Stripped of its bark... ...each "nut" is then polished. The resulting material, whose natural color and feel are similar to those of animal ivory, is surprising. The process that transformed the albumen into pure cellulose gives tagua its exceptional characteristics of fine grain and strength.
Shaping the pieces Traditional dyeing Mod.Tutti-frutti orange To exploit it, it can be sculpted, shaped, sliced, cut as desired, to provide the desired shapes which are then dyed in a traditional way. Assembled by hand by the artisans of our Quito workshop, the tagua pieces form our collection of pendants, necklaces, bracelets, earrings...

Plant ivory is so little known to the general public (and to the vast majority of retailers involved) that extensive communication is needed to help raise the profile of this material and ensure its successful comeback as a noble, environmentally-friendly material:
Publicize the exceptional qualities of this material: look, feel, depth of color...
Emphasize its natural origin: palm trees grow wild on the slopes of shady valleys, which, in the absence of deforestation, is synonymous with sustainable development and environmental ethics.
Promoting the craftsmanship of an emerging country
Support fair trade, respected by all players in the production and distribution chain
